Cracked Concrete Foundation

How Radon Enters The Home

Radon becomes a problem in homes primarily because it can accumulate in enclosed spaces. The gas typically enters through cracks in the foundation, gaps around pipes, or other openings in the structure.

Homes with poor ventilation or those built on radon-prone soil are particularly vulnerable to elevated radon levels. Because radon levels can vary greatly from one home to another—even within the same neighborhood—it’s essential to conduct testing, as there’s no way to predict if your home has high radon levels without it.

Radon in homes is tied to the geology beneath the building. Certain soils and rocks, like granite and shale, contain more uranium, leading to higher radon production.

Once formed, radon can migrate up through the foundation. Energy-efficient homes, often sealed tightly to conserve energy, can trap radon inside, making testing and mitigation vital for a safe environment.

What To Expect with Radon Testing

1. Pre-Test Preparation

Before the test, we’ll provide you with simple instructions, such as keeping windows and doors closed for at least 12 hours before and during the test. We’ll also ask you to maintain your normal heating and cooling settings to ensure accurate results.

2. Radon Testing

On the day of the test, we’ll carefully place a radon detector in the lowest livable area of your home, avoiding spots with drafts, high humidity, or close to exterior walls. Depending on the layout of your home, we might use several devices to ensure we get a comprehensive reading.

3. Obtaining Results

Once the testing period is complete, we’ll return to your property to collect the radon detector. Our team will be able to see the finalized results and we can share this information with our customer. Within 24 hours, we will send a detailed report with all findings and recommendations.

4. Threshold of High Radon Levels

If radon levels are found to be 4.0 pCi/L or higher, we’ll recommend reliable radon mitigation services to address the issue. Ensuring the safety and well-being of the property’s occupants is our top priority.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my home needs radon testing?
Most homes should be tested for radon, especially in areas like Iowa, where the soil composition and geological factors make elevated radon levels more common. Radon can seep into homes regardless of age, construction type, or location, and it can vary greatly even between neighboring houses. Since radon is a colorless, odorless gas, testing is the only way to determine if your home is at risk. Given the high radon potential in Iowa, it’s particularly important to ensure your home is safe.

Can I test for radon myself, or do I need a professional?
While do-it-yourself radon test kits are available, it’s important to understand that not all devices are created equal. Many inexpensive kits sold online, such as those on Amazon, may lack the accuracy and reliability necessary to get a true reading of your home’s radon levels. These kits often don’t meet the stringent quality standards required for precise radon measurement, which can result in false readings—either giving you a false sense of security or missing a potentially dangerous level of radon.

How often should I have my home tested for radon?
It’s recommended to test your home for radon every 2 to 5 years, or after any significant renovations or changes to your home’s foundation. You should also test if you’ve never done so before or if you’ve recently moved to a new home.
